desktop to laptop network

ok i have my desktop and want to transfer some large files between 700mb and 4.5gb.
i have a patch over cable(yellow) to connect to laptop.
i have tried alsorts to be able to network them but to no avail, any help would be great.

do you have a router?

is the patch cable a normal one, or crossover?

For direct connection, the cable needs to be a crossover. Hold both connectors next to each other, the same way up. Look at the individual wire colours inside; they should be a mirror image.

thanks chippy_minton that worked a treat but i have to change ip address back if i want to connect to internet again on my desktop , any ideas so i ain't gotta change it back again, cheers cash.
