iceberg lettuce

Options
I often buy icebergs on the market, as they're a lot cheaper, but I usually buy two or three, as that's how they're sold and it works out cheaper. But they often end up going slimy besides salad/in sandwiches, is there much that can be done with them? I also thought about using them as tortilla style wraps, but I was wondering if there was anything that would use a larger amount?
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks!

MOngolian lamb is served in resturaunts in lettuce wraps and quite a few oriental dishes use them to parcel meat & fish etc.

the reason why they are sold in 3s and fours is cos they dont keep, you cant freeze and they are heading for the compost. Lettuce unfortunately just isnt that versatile. Although there is a lettuce soup in one of my cookbooks. - whether it would freeze well, I dont know.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Really? - ours don't. Never come across them being sold other than singly. Can you buy just one if you want to? if so how does the price compare with one you'll use up rather than throwing some away. We often have tortillas for tea and I put shredded lettuce on table for them. Put a bowl of salad on table for people to add to their meal when doing things like pizzas, lasagna, burgers.

Try trimming a fraction off the very bottom of the stalk of the lettuce off - and standing it in a bowl with a small amount of water in - a bit like a bunch of flowers, Lettuce keeps for a long while - I've kept them for a couple of weeks or more in the fridge doing this. Just break off the outer leaves as required, and keep trimming off the stalk as it gets brown every few days.

It depends, sometimes they're 3 for a pound or 40p each - in which case I buy one. But sometimes they just have lots of big bowls of different fruit and veg, and it's any bowl for £1, and they won't sell them singly.

Thanks furndire, I shall definitely try that.

Now I'm going to do some searching to see if I can find a lettuce soup recipe!

I wouldn't bother with them at all:) . They are actually quite low in useful nutrients as they are mainly water. The darker green your lettuce is the better for you it is. Stick to cabbage and carrots this time of year :D Or try sprouting your own mung bean sprouts - packed with nutrition ;)
  • On one of the healthy eating/diet type programmes they served a HM burger wrapped in a big lettuce leaf, instead of a bun/roll (or whatever you call it in your part of the country). I keep meaning to try it as it looked tasty.
  • Hi guys

I've done a search but nothing has popped up so here goes.

I've got half an iceberg lettuce sat in my veg box crying out to be used up - but I can't think of anything to do with it and there must be something. Its made harder by the fact that I am not buying anymore food this week as I'm trying to run down my freezer / cupboards and save some cash. I'm also not having sandwiches so can't stuff some in those.

I have no other salad ingredients so that's out and I don't think you can use iceberg in lettuce soup. I'm totally baffled to be honest and hoping the wonderful old stylers can come to my rescue :T

    Thanks in advance.
