Engine Malfunction light on Ford Focus

The engine malfunction light and the cooling system light came on while I was driving my ford Focus yesterday and the car was loosing power. I checked the water and it was very low so I topped it up and left it for a few hours. I then drove it home about 8 miles and it drove fine but although the cooling system light has gone out the engine malfunction light stayed on. Does this mean it was not the low water and there is another problem? Or does it just have to be reset because there was a problem. I know nothing about cars and had to get the instruction book out to find out how to open the bonnet!

I do have breakdown cover with home start but not sure I can call them out for this as the car is driving o k.

You need to get the light reset, Most garages will do that for £20 or so. You dont say what year /engine.

But you can but boxes to reset the light and read error codes. But depends on your car. These start from £15
    decent ones £30 +

A reasonable garage will read the code, tell you what it means, and reset the light for you. As already said, you want to get the light reset - if it remains out, the fault has gone away.
