Child benefit

Hi
How long does it take to normally process an application for child benefit?
Mt step son came to live with us (15) at the beginning of Oct, we applied for CB straight away, they sent us a letter in Nov, confirming bank account details which we sent back straight away, and have heard nothing since.
HB phoned them before Christmas - and was told to stop phoning they had all the paper work and would sort it in due course, but not to expect payment before end Jan - fine.
Someone at work has told me they will only back date for 3 months - now it has gone past the three month date since we applied, and could really do with the money - as we had to buy complete new uniforms etc when he came to live with us - as nothing was compatible from his old school.
Just wondering.

do you know when whoever claimed Child Benefit for him prior to your DH received their last payment?
I think the 3 month backdated refers to three months prior to the date you claimed rather than not sorted after three months.0
