£3.600 tax demand written off in 4 hours!

1 Post
Yesterday at 4pm my husband opened a tax demand for £3626.20 relating to tax year 2008/09. it seemed we had been caught in the great tax mess-up relating to PAYE. At first we panicked, ran around like headless chickens and endured a fruitless telephone call with the tax office. Then we took a deep breath and consulted advice on this website. We seemed to fit the criteria to lodge an appeal under clause ESC A19, so we gathered our thoughts and all relevant documentation and made another call. As soon as we quoted this clause we were passed on to someone with authority to make a decision. The questions were many and detailed but we had the answers and the paperwork to back everything up. At first we were advised to put everything in writing, but later in the evening we received a call to say that further enquiries had revealed documents had been received by HMRC but had not been acted upon, therefore the debt would be cancelled. We cannot thank moneysavingexpert enough for giving us clear, straightforward information in plain English. Tax matters are complicated affairs at the best of times but when you are faced with such a large and unexpected demand for money they become even more so. You saved us not only cash but peace of mind. :A
