Hi

I was getting a rattling noise from the front side of my Ford MOndeo and it seems like the exhaust heat shield is not holding onto its place.

Ford is quoting £650 to replace it, but I've no plans to do it at Ford, its just to get an idea of what part is causing it, coz when I took it to my local garage they were not sure, where to get that part from and they also recommended just removing the whole thing and leave it like that.

So is there anyway I can get this done at a reasonable cost, please hlep me out.

  • Is it underneath? Or up in the engine bay. If its underneath, get the garage to remove the securing bolts(the shield will probably have corroded around them before falling down) and use something to pack it out.
Perhaps a large washer, I used folded over chicken wire and poked the bolt through it before bolting it on again.

I have used penny washers before to cover the large hole and secure again.
For price it sounds like only comes as part of downpipe/cat assembly or the lugs on exhaust are knackered,in this case I would remove and either leave alone or get it heat wrapped that's what I have done with manifold on my 205 gti far more efficient than heat shields
  • Just cut it off you could buy a new mondeo with £650 lol

i thought a civic type r one at £60 fitted was a rip off
  • Just cut it off

    Irresponsible and potentially dangerous advice.
Whoever designed the car obviously thought that a heat shield was required in that particular location. Could be shielding fuel pipes or anything else, that will not react too kindly to heat, from the exhaust.
So no, don't "just cut it off"!

Thanks for replying...I thought so, cutting it off is easy and one of the technicians did suggested it, but I was not sure. Anyway its underenath and I'll have to go the re-fit otpion with new washers I presume.

Most garages would cut it off and refit the new one as the bolt heads will be corroded

as said above the heat wrap is a much more usefull than the heat shield it wont fall off and wont rattle and reduces all the heat across the entire exhaust.

I don't know if it's any help but we had a similar problem on a Ford Focus  (now sadly gone...it helped to pay some things of though :D). I ended up getting the putty that sets like metal (you can drill, sand it, etc. when it's set). I think you can get some from most DIY shops ;). Set it around the washers and where it had started to corrode the heat shield. If anything, it was more 'solid' after that.
Good luck...and I hope you find a solution...
