advice on utility monthly payment change

Hi all newbie here. I need some advice. We switched to edf several months ago on a fixed direct debit tariff. Well now we have received a letter indicating that they wish to raise our monthly payments due to what they believe are excessive consumption of gas. They want to raise the tariff. Can they do this seeing as there was a fixed amount agreed at the time of signing the contract.?

You agreed to pay a fixed price per kWh - you have to pay that price for each and every kWh you used, not just pay the initial fixed monthly amount regardless of how much you use.

And that is only if it is a fixed tariff - chances are you are doubly confused as you may be on a variable tariff where the price is variable as well (but with a small guarantee as to how much it can be raised).

What is the name of your tariff?

(The instalment is labelled 'fixed' direct debit as the size of the instalment is kept the same for three or six months at a time rather than being varied every month.)
