if you're receiving a service from Sky then i'd presume you have to.

I don't think it would work but Freesat would work.

You use to have to pay a one off £25 for a Sky viewing card. If you have an old one then you should be ok to get the free to air channels and of course there are more on Sat than on Freeview.

Ignore my last post!! You can use the same card in two boxes but you have to phone sky to get them to send a signal out so the box recognises the card. The snag is it will not work in the original box. You will have to tell them again when you return the card to the original box. I did it a few years ago when I moved to another house for a few weeks when my house was getting renovated. They had sky but not as bigger package is I had. It only takes a few mins.

  • why not just take your one with the card with you in your caravan...Thats what we use to do back in the analogue days of Sky we also had a mobile sat dish to make things easier.....Mrs H

In analogue days that used to work fine - we had a box in an apartment abroad and could take our own card when we went and advise guests who had Sky at home to do the same AFAIK.
Since the advent of didgy boxes the card ony works with the box it's tuned to.
You don't need to be connected to a phone line for a second Sky box to work - our isn't in the Canaries - but you do need a card that's authorised with that box. I'd ring a local independent Sky installer and ask them what your options are.

I take my card from home to put in the digibox in the caravan. You get all the channels (including ones like Discovery), but not any premium channels (Sports and Movies). Otherwise you have to phone sky as above which isn't worth it for a week or two.
I picked up a digibox for free off Freecycle so this was the easiest option.

The other option, as someone has said, is to take your home box with you which is fairly easy to do as you just unscrew the dish lead and ariel lead, pull out the power plug and disconnect the scart.
