Car insurance for foreigner with UK licence - how to carry over driving experience

Hi,

I've been driving for 11 years now (grew up in the US), but have only had my UK licence for less than 2 years. I'm keen to buy a car in the UK soon, but don't want to be considered a "new driver" for the purpose of car insurance.

Do any insurance companies take into account your driving experience accumulated in other countries?

Thanks,
Chris

I think it is possible, but only a few companies will do it. If you have a good insurance broker, they may be able to give you some pointers.

I'm sure my previous housemate managed to get her NCB built up in Australia applied to her car here somehow, but she was restricted on which insurance company she could use.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • I lived overseas for several years. Before returning to the UK I got a letter from my overseas insurer on letterheaded paper that outlined my insurance and no claims history with them (It probably helped that this was in English and that the insurance company was also a subsidiary of one of the big UK insurers at that time). This was accepted by my new UK insurance company for NCB purposes.

This is a very good point, in particular the fact that the insurance history was on letterheaded paper in English from the previous insurer.

A good broker would be able to get an introductory discount in all likelyhood with the above evidence.

I got my UK license in 2007, I think, but I came to UK from another EU nation, and I have held driving license there since1998. I haven't been driving really until 2006 (ok, occasional driving maybe once a year), and I had no problems getting car insurance, and it wasn't through the roof. I did not claim any 'no claims' years, and I think my insurance was about £300-350? I was 27 (female). I had an accident that autumn (not my fault - other driver hit the rear of my car at the round about), and then someone scratched the courtesy car!, so the insurance went up a bit for the following year, but it wasn't much more than £400, I think.

But the rules maybe different from non EU?

    Hi,

following your conversation i find it very suitable to my status.
i moved to the uk a year ago and i own a car for a year using my int driving license.now the insurance i did using this license had been expired and by that time i did a uk driving license(have it for 4 month)now, i want to renew my insurance but all the insurance companies i've called told me that they can insure me but by using the 4 month driving license and do not consider i'm on the road for at least 20 years.
can you please send link for the companies who will insure me using considering all my 20 years of experience?

    thanks
