Btw the standard taxi doesn't have much boot space because of the LPG tank taking up a lot.

You've reminded me now ..we had to cram a suitcase into the front seat with me ..Maybe not to pleasant if you are shattered.

One thing they don't scam you with in Thailand is the weed.
It's all low-key but if the local cops are taking back-handers it's game-on.
Going price for a ready rolled big tube of a spliff is about four quid.
Big heavy rush up front but a nice slow come-down for about an hour.
And I sh$t you not they know exactly when to be at your table with another doobie.
This time last week I was lying on a beach in Koh Phi Phi staring at the stars with an ice-cold Singha, a nice three-skinner fired up and the missus next to me wanting to give up everything and move there.
Thank Christ we don't have a mortgage.

Better than an experience I had once of getting into a taxi shattered (and possibly drunk), getting out of the taxi at the hotel, watching the taxi drive off... and then realising my suitcase was in the boot.

Fortunately the driver had given my his card (with the offer of "I show you good times. Lots of girls") and the hotel managed to call him and get him to return with my case.

First time I was in BKK many years ago, I had become separated from Mrs P for a few minutes while she was on the other side of the road. I was approached by a guy selling 'meat' so to speak and I was 'lucky' as it was 'Happy Hour'!

The concept of buying sex on a 'buy one get one free' basis was intriguing - obviously I declined the 'offer'.

On reuniting with Mrs P, and explaining about what I had been offered on a 'happy hour' basis , she just shrugged her shoulders and suggested that I would not get value for money as I would have 58 minutes to spare!

The first time I went to BKK I arranged a chauffeur driven Merc from the airport to the hotel for around £10. Given the increase in prices and the change in the exchange rate, I wouldn't dream of doing that now.

That's still a bargain though. I found tuk-tuks were the most fun, as long as you barter a price before getting in!

Also, completely agree with ecleeconfused - the River taxi's are also great fun. Don't put your hand in the river though - it's pretty dirty :(

Also, with taxis, make sure the meter is running, otherwise you could get stung at the other end. Didn't happen to me, but a friend got taken for about £30. That's a lot in Thailand...
  • the biggest scame of the lot is the 'men' who look like women (not that i've made the mistake)

as the old saying goes 'if its too good to be true, it(s) usually a man (is)

http://www.bangkokscams.com/scams-in-bangkok/feed-pigeons-scam-near-grand-palace-2.html Feeding the pigeons seems like another one to watch! Generally worth looking through the entire site here and reading people's comments too :)

I so love Thailand. I have come across worse scams in other countries.I think it is par for the course now where tourists go. Most have been highlighted here so just take care,it is a wonderful country.

  • The precious stones scam is usually popular with backpackers: a Tuk-Tuk driver takes the victim to a shop, the owner sells them some precious stones and packs them securely. The victim posts them home or to another country thinking they can be sold for a massive profit and then gets home to find they are worthless. I met one or two people who had been scammed like this.

I also remember another one used mainly on tourists, where they persuade the victim to take part in a rigged card game against an "out of town" businessman to fleece him. Unfortunately it is the tourist who ends up getting fleeced.

I think the Lonely Planet guides or tourist sites will usually mention this. Thankfully, these things seem quite rare.

Remember - if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.
