Basic = save, print, change fonts/colors, etc.
Intermediate = comfortable using the software daily. More advanced formatting.
Advanced = Can do anything with the software. With Excel, it would mean knowing a lot of advanced functions and being able to use multiple functions together in a string.
It also means being able to do all of this at a good pace as well as being able to manually enter strings in to the app.

How old are you and which lesson is this homework for?

I'm going to guess 26 so it's not likely to be schoolwork.

For Excel I'd say
Basic: Ability to do simple calculations, sorting and basic filtering of data, basic formatting options
Intermediate: Knowledge of logical statements, data/reference functions (such as vlookup), advanced formatting and filtering options
Advanced: Knowledge of VBA and Excel Macros
However it all depends on the job. Excel is a very versatile piece of software and some people may have advanced knowledge of one area but much less of another
Word is much simpler really, there's only so much you can do with it
Basic: Ability to write basic documents and apply basic formatting
Intermediate: More advanced knowledge of formatting and layout options
Advanced: Knowledge of the more obscure/lesser known word functions such as mail merge, edit/change tracking0 -

Pick up any big tutorial book for either program
Divide the pages up evenly in three sections
Section 1 - basic
2 - inter
3 - advanced0 -
If you look up what you need to know for the ECDL in spreadsheets you might be surprised to find that what they class as advanced isn't really that advanced.0
