Is there a limit on single spend with debit card please

Hi, we have to travel 160 miles on Sat to purchase a car, we intend paying with our debit card.
Already been to view and left deposit.
Dont want to carry over £6000 on public transport getting there.
Does anyone know if there is a limit as to what we would be allowed to spend.
I realise we may have to verify, but dont want to go all that way on a Saturday and be stuck.
Sorry if it seems a silly question but as you can guess we are not used to spending this much in one transaction.
Dont want to ring Bank and ask as we can never understand them:(
Thank you in advance for any advice given.:)

There is no limit. You may however need to speak to your bank when the payment is auhorised. This will be done by the car dealer, who will call their merchant and get someone on the phone to speak to you to ID you.
    Best Regards

  • there shouldnt be

The only practical limit is dictated by the balance in your account! ;)

Provided you've cleared that method with the retailer - should be no problem. But it will normally attract a telephone referral for security questions .... channeled from your Bank via the company who d/w the retailers card transactions. And they won't be the 'mother's maiden name' style. So remind yourself before you go of the last few transactions / frequent credits to your account / number of DDs on the account and 'name 3 that are not utilities' ...... sort of question!

I find it easier not to have the receptionist's cleavage in view when answering .... as 100% concentration is needed.

Thank you all very much, mind is at rest now.
    Excellent advice:)
  • There is a limit probably will vary from bank to bank but it is around £30k.

Sorry to disagree :p.... There is rarely a limit and, were there one, it would tend to be at individual rather than Bank level.

I've certainly exceeded 60K ........... albeit not on a car.

if the merchant has a terminal and the transaction is chip & PIN, the odds of your bank declining it are quite low - largely because the merchant will have been expected to obtain proof of identity for such a transaction and, if they didn't, they will end up eating the loss, not the bank.
