Hi,

I am buying a 2004 Focus ST170 and whilst I am pleased with the car there is one small problem.

The car comes with remote locking but only has ONE key and that one key can only be used manually (ie stick the key in the lock).

Please can you point me in the right direction ie

1. Can I get another key cut by a mobile service rather than got to a main dealer ?

2. Would it be safe to replace the battery in the existing key before I get another key cut ? I know some keys are very tempremental over battery changes......

3. Any idea how much it costs and how long it takes ?

Thank you for your help.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

What's happened to the other key?

Let's hope it's not a private sale by a dodgy seller.

I asked about this but the selling owner has owned it for years.

You are not alone in these thoughts though !

If your ordering new a new key from ford I believe that make you buy 3 instead of just the 1. I know fiesta cars are around 35 each. But I'm sure there are some independent suppliers but I dont know any costs or contacts sorry.

I've heard mixed reports about Ford keys not being bought from Ford. It's a case of pay your money and take a chance.

Ask at your local backstreet auto-elec / car-alarm / chavtastic-car-audio shop. If they can't do it they'll probably know somewhere that will.
  • Suggest you don't touch with a barge pole until the current owner gets a new key cut and the Central Locking working.

If they wont, there are other cars out there. If it's a "good price", it's a good price for a reason.

Not thought of that - we have a great local based/staffed auto shop - Imagine Halfords with good service and good quality - shall nip in there in the next day or so !! Thanks

The central locking works but only with the key in the lock.

Going back to the original question - can it be done and how much ??

You can just replace the key remote key battery with no problems, CR2032. Obviously you need to do this and test that it operates the central locking. If that works you need to find a lock service that can do full Ford key cloning. Failing that your local dealer will do it but don't expect much change out of £200. The car originally came with one remote and one blue chip key. If you are paying for keys get 2, one remote and one master. With 2 keys you can reprogram another yourself.
