It is a BSc, Thanks for both your comments Andygill and bestpud. Its not what we wanted to hear but life is sometimes like that. My son is coming home on Wenesday so hopefully he will know a bit more and I can also give him this advice. I wasn't sure what to do which is why I made these posts as there is usually someone else who can help. Thankyou for taking the time to respond and give your advice.

The next step is to look at an accredited MSc in an area he is interested in. There is also nothing stopping him looking at PhD or EngD qualifications. They are funded and the latter is based in industry. It is also common for people to go into industry with a BSc or BEng then study part time for an (accredited) MSc and this could be funded by the company.

I think it is a bit rich that the uni didn't bother to tell the students if the course is accredited.

The onus is surely on the student to check that the course they are applying for meets their needs and requirements?

also suggest that your son speaks to the careers service at his uni. they should be able to advise him about any implications of not being accredited in terms of the jobs he wants to do. well worth an appointment with them (they are a massively underused resource!).

  • Big thanksWhitfreak, Andyguil and melancholy for some excellent advice. Just spoken to my son, he sounds a lot more positive, still applying for jobs and looking at options of nearby unis to do his MSc at if that becomes necessary so he can live at home.
He has spoken to his tutor who states the people that gave the information DID tell the students it WAS accredited but that was a mistake as the course has never been accredited.
He is not the only one in this as all the students in his group were given this advise so it appears they were given the wrong advise but son states he trusts his tutor who is a good man and he does not want to take it further as he just wants to move on from this. I am very proud of my son, he is a gentleman and a hard worker. I hope he gets the very best job and prospective employers do not have the same attitude as some of the more negative posters to this thread, but hey the world is made up of all sorts of people with all sorts of different opinions that they are entitled to.

The engineering council website lets you check if a course is accredited .

this is now well worth persuing. is there any written evidence of this? can they go through the student rep who go to teaching meetings and get it noted in minutes so at least there is a record that they acknowledge it? he may not want to cause a problem, but some mistakes can't just be left alone.... i'd at least expect the department to investigate this as there are so many people who should check these details that it might highlight some systematic error they'd want to avoid in the future.

    e at home.

But who was the person who told them this, did s/he work for the university and how is it that s/he just happened to speak to every individual in a group of students before they applied?

    Sounds very strange to me.
