Waiting list in my council area is over a DECADE. Even if you're high priority, you're going to really struggle to get anything. Temporary accommodation, usually in the form of B&B, is the norm for years for most people.0

And MANY areas have very short waiting lists. In many cases, a regular, non-priority applicant will be housed within 12 months.0

We we got married back in the dark ages (1970) we were told by our local council that we'd be on the waiting list for around 25 years before we'd get a council property. We were both in full time work & had no children. Thankfully a week before we got married we found an unfurnished flat (hard to get even in those days) otherwise we would have had to move in with my parents. We then saved hard for 5 years before we had enough money for a deposit on our own home.0

Because it would give you priority over someone who already is housed, for example, with family. You will get LHA towards the rent if you go into B&B as well though (I think you already said this). You'll only be in there for 'years' if you do not apply for anything on the CBL system. Although you might not have enough points you can be passed over as a priority case on anything you apply for. You'll get moved quicker if not sharing with family. They know this, this is why they gave you the max points as there will always be someone else with priority.
If you DESPERATELY require housing then you'll go into the B&B. They are trying to weedle out the ones who NEED and the ones who WANT. If you can afford to rent privately you do not need, if you are quite happy to stay with your mum you do not need either. They want the housing to go to people who need it.
We was 3 days from moving into a hostel but we got offered a place on choice based lettings. I don't think we had enough points but we became priority as the bailiff was due in a few days (landlord was selling up and we could not rent elsewhere) and we had nowhere else to go but the hostel and had 2 children. But we really had nowhere else to go and was quite prepared to go into the hostel if need be. It was hard telling the kids just to pack one box of toys as everything else might have to go into storage. But, you do what you have to do when you have no other choices. Especially with a baby who is so tiny and will not remember it. it will be crappy for a few months but you do what you have to do if there are no other options/
If you were unemployed you'd still be in the same situation of having to go into the B&B, they do not give you housing if you lose your job you still have to apply like everyone else, you still have to prove you have no money like everyone else, all you are doing by staying at your mums is proving you have a secure roof over your head and do not NEED somewhere else to live. The only way you'll get things moving is to go to the B&B.0
