DS1 was motivated to do well by cold hard cash (he had his eye on a superdry jacket ) and also by the fact that our local school isn't the one all his friends would have been going to anyway so he had no incentive to fail like some of his friends.

Lol i like that cold hard cash argument, i promised her a trip to Disney ;), will see how that holds out when she is coming to 11 :D

  • Hi,

I have just put my son through this. My advise for all parents is to start as early as possible ! Gradually drip feeding the child is much better than last minute perp. I used a combination of resources:

BOND papers - Like (Madmel said)
IPS papers - Purchased from WH Smith

Make sure you buy the right ones depending on the school. i.e. if there is no NVR dont buy the bundles.

    For online resources I used:

    chakr. co. uk
    11plusdiy.co.uk
    11plusswat

My review of online resources is mixed. A lot will promise you free stuff but is practically useless. So save yourself time and dont spend too much time looking for "free" stuff !" Go for a reasonably paid service like 11PlusDIY.

    hope this helps.

I would say don't do too much prep for it - if your child has the right intellegence then they will pass, if not then it wouldn't be the right school for them. I had no prep and sailed through school, but by the end of yr8 many who had had a lot of tutoring were struggling and it only got harder as the years went on.

Totaly agree. My dad, who was a primary school head also didnt agree with cramming, as opposed to another local school who did 11 plus tests 3 and 4 times a week for the year before. One girl, who wasn't particularly bright was moved from my dad's school when he told them that he didnt feel that she would pass her 11 plus. She did test after test and ended up in my class in grammar school - I had no tutoring. She was in the bottom 2 the whole of her time in that school, and must have been deeply unhappy, as she became a joke with the other girls (young teenage girls are so cruel!). My father always said that she might have done so much better if she had been allowed to develop at her own pace - she left school with no qualification at all to her name... apart from the damn 11 plus.

    Hi Shays_mum,

There are 4 subjects usually tested for - English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR). If you want to see what these mean you can find out more on Chackra web site. If you want to try an online test (Are you smarter than a 10 year old ??!!) try 11plusdiy.co.uk

Try this code 2301 in the 11PlusDIY shop. Dont knowif it will work for everyone as I got it in an email.
