Rejected DD

Due to a miscalculation on my part, Alliance and Leicester have recently charged me for exceding my overdraft limit - two direct debits were involved - one was paid, but I was charged, and the other was rejected, and I was charged again. By the following day, my account was back in credit; I have called the company whose DD failed, and they tell me they will try again in a week or so. Will any of this affect my credit rating?

  • It will probably go down as a late payment.
One or two of these over a long period of time sometimes increases your credit score as it proves you are human in making the occasional mistake and some companies will take the view that they stand to make money out of you.
If it is a regular (or becomes regular) occurance it will become a downer on your file.

Depending on who it was, it may not even be reported. If it was a utility bill, there's a good chance it won't be (depends on provider) and a lot of companies only report arrears of more than a month anyway

You're telling me. One tiny mistake and - whack - they hit you with a sledgehammer.

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was in the process of switching to A&L. The 2 companies involved didn't even bother writing to me to let me know and when they sent me the bills for the next month the outstanding arrears were included. I knew that the bills hadn't been paid as I check my dds on a daily basis. I phoned the 2 companies involved and offered to pay these my debit card and they said it didn't matter and they would just take the arrears with the next months bill. I questioned if this would affect my credit rating and they both said that they wouldn't record it as a late payment so all should be fine as long as the arrears were paid off this month. Very weird indeed!

I should imagine that you'll be fine as long as the money is there to pay the outstanding amounts when they represent the dd the week later.
