In my defence, the one I mentioned in the posts as being really good does a 2 for 1 deal on our favourite dish where it can work out cheaper than most pubs and fast food places for a meal that is far nicer - so we usually just go when thats on.

Yes - I would tip if the food and service is good. Usually these guys don't get paid a lot, and a good waiter/waitress can make the difference between a poor meal and a great evening.
Normally, I would expect that tips are pooled, so that everyone, including the washer-up, gets a share. This improves the atmosphere of a restaurant 'all round' and they tend to remember you the next time.
I hasten to add that I am NOT a big tipper, nor do I go for the ridiculous French Idea of a fixed percentage - I would rarely leave a tip in excess of £5, but would feel a bit miserly to leave 50p if I had spent say £8.00 on a good pub meal - so I would probably leave £2.00.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

NO i don't tip, if the people don't like the job and the wages get another one. I'm not there to suppliment their pockets for doing their job and like at Maccy d's u don't tip the people that work there do u yet they do the same job as someone that works in a restaurant.
and for those that put a tip automatically on the bill it makes me fume!

Im not a good DFW - I always tip on the extreemly rare occasion that I do go out for a meal, I always tip taxi drivers again on the extreemly rare occasion that I get a taxi and I always leave an extra couple of pounds at the hairdresser too. The tips that I leave are probably only a couple of pounds or whatever change I have in my purse at the time or if the taxi charge is say £5.50 I would pay £6.00. I leave the bin men some cans of beer out at christmas and give the postman a voucher if I have one left. You know the saying 'a fool and their money' ? That's really sad. But ff you can afford to go out for a meal, you can afford to leave a decent tip, especially if the service has been good.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
Willsnarf1983 - nice to hear the alternate opinion. I slightly disagree about 'its the same as Maccy Ds' - I have to give my order several times to them, half the time they get it wrong, and they're almost always rude - they don't bring it to your table either.
A proper restraunt has good service, real food, brought to your table, and if you want to ask for something unusual they go out of their way to help - thats what I see the tip as being for.
I'd never thought of tipping a hairdresser - but I've only used one once in the past 4 years, normally do my own hair - better not go back to that one!DFW Nerd No. 140

Here is another one
why tip someone that gives you a service but never the postman every week or everymonth (rather than just at xmas) or the milkman who drives out each day to replenish you with milk. Or how about the garbage men that come once a week etc etc
Its just that in society apparently that certain jobs require a tip and certain jobs don't, who decides which jobs deserve tips and which don't. Totally messed up and then when they try and make you feel bad for deciding not to tip makes it even worse!

To confuse the issue...
One time I never tip is when I'm mystery shopping for one of the companies which will refund your bill, but not the tip. I consider my report is their 'tip' - I trust that good comments will have a good result, and v.v.

Good point willsnarf1983.
Even as someone who doesn't mind tipping, I do think that they should never make you feel bad if you don't. Last holiday I took (flights were a gift, had to find my own spending money though) I had some grief for going to the bar to buy my own drinks instead of using waitress service. The waitresses were really pushy and kept asking 'do you want another drink' when my drink was still 3/4 full, and they were asking for tips every time they brought a drink over.
I just couldn't afford that - I wanted to buy drinks at my own pace, and not have the added expense of tips. That was in the USA though - maybe they really rely on tips a lot more over there, making them more pushy.
Jobbingmusician - do you give a bad report if you are treated badly for not tipping?DFW Nerd No. 140

I used to work in both bars and restaraunts and can agree with both sides of the 'to tip or not to tip' arguement. Willsnarf1983 does raise valid points why tip a taxi driver but not a bus driver? a waiter but not someone in Maccy D's?
The level of income received by most bar/waiting staff whilst not on the breadline is very often not far from it. Any tips I received went to the monthly meal out with my OH at the time as she was too ill to work. And it usually means very long hours on your feet.
I guess the point I am trying to make is it's a more personal service you recieve from a waiter than a 'Crew Member' and same for the taxi driver over the bus driver.Total Debt - £2320.48, was £4286.48
