Well emergencies depend on what you have responcibility for IYSWIM? So if you are responcible for say the washing machine, dishwasher, tumbledrier, car breakages etc etc etc then you need probably £200 stashed away for any emergency... if repair of the central heating in your home or a leaky roof is down to you... you'd want more... does that make sense?
As you're on benefits I'd try and have a months worth of benefits JUST IN CASE anything goes wrong with your claims... But that will take a long time to build up and you really need to focus on your debts first...

Spending diary - make sure you list everything! Might help going back over your statements to see if you can spot where the money has vanished...
Personally I monitor my bank account like a hawk but I probably do need to get out more ;) So i always know where money has gone and I keep my income and outgoings spreadsheet too :) Personally I need the peace of mind of knowing where everything has gone and what is left... Come hell or highwater - other than my car finance - I WILL be debt free by the end of 2011 ;) Setting yourself a target might help you - but you HAVE to make sure it's realistic! Otherwise you will only demotivate yourself :)
