Motherborad & Memory match

Hi

My motherboard (IC7-MAX3) is broken, I can see a burnt area where some green component used to be and it does not boot even though it does light up.

Can motherboards be fixed and if so does anyone know where to get this done?

If not fixable then I need to match a new motherboard with my existing memory, and 8x AGP graphics card, does anyone know of a website that will match my memory to a new socket 478 board.

I know crucial match memory to motherboard but not the other way round.

Thank you.

Don't know of such a website. And repairing MB's is generally uneconomic. But just looked on Ebuyer and Dabs, both only list ONE 478 MB and that takes DDR2. So unless you have DDR2 you may be out of luck unless you buy second-hand.

Depending on how old your computer is. If old:

    (1) Cheaper replacing motherboard, memory, and cpu - (total cost roughly £80) if you are smart.
    (2) If you can find the board and it is not old - £30-£40
    (3) Board and memory - (£50-£60).

Try ebuyer. They tend to stock the most latest stuff.

  • that's a great board (or was!)
There are some on ebay 2nd hand, replacing the broken bit (probably a cap) is, I'm sure, possible..you just need to find out exactly what it is..and find someone with a steady hand and a good soldering iron (not me!), might not be worth it though - maybe blowing was an indicator of another fault?
finding a NEW board supporting 478 + ddr (not ddr2 or 3) RAM +agp is kinda tricky, though I'm sure someone must have some. Might be time to start again on a newer platform?

You can check what type of memory you have by easily looking at crucial website.

Read your own post. IC7-MAX3 takes ddr 400 ram, unlike the asrock board.
  • teddy - his original board is DDR - so i guess that's the RAM he wants to work around...and his GPU AGP..so that ebuyer board is no good to him. :)

best bet is to start again though, PCs aren't like classic cars...

  • Thanks guys, this was a spare thats already been replaced, but as it had been just laying naround for ages I would pass it on to a mate.

I got it all ready, formatted, protected and updated and running as good as my quad, then when he came to collect it would not boot, I thought it was the PSU at first and because the case was a bit shabby I bought an identicle one off ebay (amtect - nice case) £35

Then found it to be the board.

Been tracking a few IC7's on ebay but all go for more that I wanted to pay, but it looks like the way to go.

I was only asking £120 for the thing but it seems a waste to dump or split it.

I still have a 'fixed up' AMD x2 4800+ machine sitting in my cupboard gathering dust I regret 'fixing' even for the £50 I spent on it, looking back i'd have been better off dumping it and saving my £50.

Make sure you look hard at the economics of it as you can get a perfectly reasonable 2nd hand PC, not as old as a DDR machine for around £40 these days.

Was going to say much the same thing - you can get a fully functional system or fully functioning components that are a few years old (but still more than capable of doing the average bit of browsing etc obviously) for next to nothing now.

You could probably build a reasonable am2 machine for £60 - the ram or psu would be the most expensive component in it
