New Gas & Electricity customer needs advice

Hi,
I'm moving out of my parent's house into a rented house with my girlfriend. Apparently the house is billed for electricity by E.On and is on a payment card for gas from Scottish Power. I found this out by phoning British Gas to try to get a payment card...we haven't got the keys yet and didn't know the current providers to just took a guess!
British Gas have obviously spotted the opportunity to grab a new customer so offered us dual-fuel but rather than accepting it I thought I'd jump on here and see what was the best thing to do.
Obviously as we've not lived there before we don't know how much gas or electricity we'll be using. Does anybody have any recommendations on what we should do? Should we just get a new Scottish Power gas card and see how we go for a month or two with SP and E.On, or is there a good provider we should start with?
Thanks in advance everybody.
Ben

you should compare the prices (units charge and/or daily charge) of all these companies first ?0

Hi Ben, welcome :hello:
Once you have taken over the responsibility of the property you will need to contact the current suppliers with your details, make sure you provide your meter readings from the date you moved in.
As rabbitmumu has said, the best thing to do is use the comparison sites to see what tariff/supplier would be best for you.
Whilst you are deciding what to do, ask E.ON if you can be put on the best tariff for the time being (this depends on how you want to pay, managing your account online etc) probably best to pick one that doesn't have a cancellation fee.
If you need any more info, just let me know.
