LCD/Plasma TVs - How is the picture quality?

Hi

I'm curious to know how the picture quality for lcd/plasma tvs are with a normal sky broadcast?

do they match the quality of crt televisions? or are they only better than crt when the HD signal is useD?

i saw a samsung lcd television and watched sky telly on it...and the picture was relatively awful compared to my crt...blocky and pixellated. is this normal and expected?

any insight would be much appreciated.

LCD is basically the worst, then plasma and then CRT.

More specifically, my viewing indicates the following order with SD material:
CRT best, SD plasma, HD plasma, LCD (note that I think an SD screen looks better with SD material than an HD screen). With HD material, the first 3 may re-order a bit, but I think LCD would likely remain at the bottom.

You should not that alot also depends on whether you are feeding a raw signal or are doing it properly and processing the signal first.
    2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.
  • what do u mean processing the signal?

All i mean is plugging it into a standard Sky broadcast watching standard sky television.

and i'd get better quality picture watching SD Sky with an SD Tv than and HD one?

    Why is LCD so bad?

    cheers

Suggest going somewhere like John Lewis and spending some time looking at the different makes and technologies. Also worth perhaps spending some time in one of the Sony centres, Panasonic Shops or somewhere like Richer sounds. Get them to go through it with you in detail.

Different makes produce different subjective quality as well as the quality varying between different technologies. At the moment LCDs seem to produce poorer pictures of fast moving images such as football due to the response time of the screens and have difficulty with producing really deep blacks.

For the full gen it may be worth looking at http://www.avforums.com/ but it is a bit techie. A good deal at the moment is the Panasonic TH42PX60 price matched by Richer Sounds with Gultronics (also have 5 years warranty from Panasonic till Christmas).

Be warned however that another big change is just beginning with 'full' 1280 definition HD being the next 'must have' technology
