When you are on a pay as you go meter, you are simply feeding the meter with credit and the money is taken to pay for the gas, however, if there are price changes to the unit costs and meter is not updated, or the meter breaks and is not deducting the money (which it sounds like yours was) then the gas is not being paid for, and you then recieve a big catch up bill. As you have not reported it to the supplier, whether just an oversight or not, you have not paid them the money for the gas consumed. This money may well have still been on the gas card/key when you moved. If you have receipts for the top ups or a record of the key id you MAY be able to prove you did pay some towards the gas and this amount could be still sitting on the key/card and could be posted to the account. If not, I am afraid you will have to pay the bill.

I agree, if you have a ppm and it rarely/never needs topping up then the customer should suspect something is wrong and call their supplier. If you dont do this, when the supplier finds out which may be years later you will be in for a large back bill.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

You need to ask to see a record of what you paid and what you owe. They can't simply demand money without evidence. They should send you a list of exactly what you put on the meter and show why they are claiming the amount they are. If they can't do that then raise a complaint with the supplier.0

but surely when they came to read the meter and they did on several occasions they therfor should of detected there was a fault yes/no?0

They are only there to read the meter, if the meter reading is increasing they will not suspect a fault. Did you not think to mention it to the meter reader?sickofgettinghassled wrote: »but surely when they came to read the meter and they did on several occasions they therfor should of detected there was a fault yes/no?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
