To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research0 -

Why not get him strings in different gages? for both the electric and acoustic, plectrums never go amiss and if you get yourself down to arcade in the town you can pick him up a book with chords in from someone he really likes. I always go to sound control the one running down to the quayside to get Jon something, I got him a drum machine one year but it depends how much you want to spend, a wha wha pedal is a good idea or an effects pedal, they are all behind the counter and range from £20 upwards.
Jon would have a fit if i got him a guitar tie or socks:rotfl:0 -
I guess he already has an effects pedal?
I bought This one for my OH for his birthday and he absolutly loves it!

How about a subscription to a guitar magazine like metal hammer? And also plectrums are good.
Stickers of logos of his favourite bands to stick on his guitar?0 -
In the Works shop there are some guitar music books with popular songs in. I bought one once for an Uncle and they weren't expensive.
What about a guitar CD, I'm sure i've seen one advertised before with all the greatest guitar/rock songs on it!!Newbie Comper

Not sure if it's of any use to you but Lidl are doing a guitar line starting tomorrow. Things like guitar stands, bags and the like, quite good prices too so I don't think they'll be in stock for long!0

You can also get mini amps, they're tiny (about 10" high) but put out a pretty good sound for practising. Especially good if he likes practising at midnight or if he doesn't want to constant lug out the larger one. this kinda thing (that's just a random google link, i know nothing about the shop). My partner uses his constantly.
Straplocks are also good, they 'lock' the strap onto the guitar so it can't fall off accidentally (good for people who jump around while playing)
If you're doing him a hamper a few cleaning bits would help fill it out as well. A soft cloth and soft brush etc. You could maybe make him up a little guitar maintenance kit with those plus strings, something to cut them, the spare plecs etc.
^ All these based on things i know my partner uses regularly. Hope it helps0 -
Bought a book for a present for my Dad once (he plays occasionally) - I think it was called 1000 greatest busking tunes.
Anyway, think I get more enjoyment out of it than he does but it has a fantastic varied selection, loads of different styles of pop, rock, folk etc.
I just find it nice to dip into, play through tunes I haven't heard in ages, old favourites...
