Windows Media Player restarting pc!

I have searched through the forum but can't find a similar problem.

I have WMP (9) on pc. I tried to play a DVD today but it wouldn't work, and for some strange reason, the pc closed down and restarted. Dodgy DVD I thought, but I have tried others but it happens with all of them.
I upgraded to WMP11, but same thing happens.

Over to laptop, where I tried the same DVDs. Worked fine with WMP(9), I also upgraded the laptop to 11, but everything is ok on it.

Have any of you techie experts any ideas why this happens? I also get a message saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error" when pc restarts.

maybe its your mpg2 codec thats causing the crash.WMP doesn't ship with the software due to licensing so you need something like powerDVD installed to play dvd's ..reinstall your DVD program and seeif that cures it...

There's always codec packs if you want to play divs/xvid as well,http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Packs.htm

Thanks John, yes I have PowerDVD installed and I can use that to watch the DVDs. I was just wondering why Media Player was doing this, it seems a bit drastic as I would just have expected a message saying it couldn't play the DVD.

I have had a look at your link, but to be honest, I don't know what they are or what they do! Can you advise me which one I should download?

6th down the list http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm I would carry on using PowerDVD its far better than MP.

Thank you for that info. I will probably take your advice and just use PowerDVD instead, as it seems to have no problems. I will download the codec thingy anyway and see how it goes.

    Thanks again.
