Ceiling Fan advice & info wanted

We are moving soon, and hubby would love a ceiling fan fitted in the bedroom.
They seem to vary a great deal in price on Ebay.

We would i suspect want one with directiona spotlights and for the fan to be remote controlled. I'm more concerned with how noisey it would be.

Anyone got one? can you offer any advice or information about these items?

Cheers

  • We've just removed two from our living room and dining room. We never used them and they only had one bulb in each so weren't bright enough as the only fixed light source in each room. They're not silent and we could hear the rumbling in the bedroom above. The living room one was hooked up to a dimmer - if you do this you need a special dimmer that can handle the reactive load of the fan motor as well as the resistive load of the light. We have another in the conservatory that is remote controlled and has 3 R50 lamps - again not silent but whether you can live with the noise such as it is, particularly in a bedroom, I don't know. Its mostly the whooshing of the blades, but the motor vibrations can resonate through the ceiling and add sort of hum if the fitting isn't perfectly balanced, as they are almost always slightly eccentrically weighted.

I have fans fitted in both bedrooms. They're not silent, there's a very low level quiet hum. When fitting I ensured both are screwed into the joists above, not just the plasterboard - perhaps either that is the problem for the others, or the fans are slightly unbalanced so cause a rumble. They come with little weights to correct any wobble. One fan is remote controlled with three 50W spot lights, the other has a single 60W bulb and isn't remote compatible. Although the second is dim, I don't want to get rid as the fan is a god-send on the hotter nights in summer.
  • Ours were securely screwed into the joists. I wouldn't want the weight of them solely supported by plasterboard.

I have two downstairs and I can't hear them when I am in the room with them but if I go upstairs into my bedroom then it is a noisy annoying rumbling. If it is the attic above your bedroom then that wouldn't matter so much. They are three speed fans with summer/winter switches that push air up one way and down the other.
They have candle bulbs that blow frequently and I can't find a nice looking energy saver to use.
  • We have two, one in each of the kids bedrooms. Bought from B&Q. They are smaller than the standard 'lounge' fans (as designed for kids rooms). There is a low volume hum when the fan is on but the kids never even mentioned it.

They are very effective at keeping the air moving and temp down in the hot weather without having a pedistal fan that the kids can play with.

Only thing I have had a problem with is one of the Halogen bulbs blew and took out the fuse in the IR controller. This fuse is soldered to the PCB making it difficult to replace. Luckily B&Q replaced the controller without issue but I am concerned that if another bulb goes, it may happen again...

I fitted a couple of them in my son's house. They don't seemed to be bothered by any noise. Having said that, there is always going to be some noise just from the movement of the air.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Thanks for all the replies so far, very interesting.
Ceiling should be coming down, so they would definately be fitted correctly.
Seen a really nice one with loads of positive reviews, but it only has a single light, and i definately want one wth three directional spots, and to operate by remote control, also want to be able to dim lights and change fan speed independantly.

On Ebay they seem to vary greatly in price from £50 upto hundreds, does anyone know why? what's so special about the really expensive ones?

I suppose a lot boils down to the old quality issue, just the ceiling fan by itself - there is an electrical wholesaler called newey and eyre, their own brand is a rebranded xpeair ceiling fan as is the controller for it.
I have fitted them a number of times and had no problems with reliability or noise, in fact id go as far as to say they are whisper quiet, all you can hear is the gentle swishing noise of the blades going around, the only time you do get some noise is when you have it on a really slow speed but even then its only a hum.

We've always had fans in the bedroom, and when we moved house decided to buy a remote controlled one to make it easier.

I agree that some fans can make a noise - if it is a rattle then you need to adjust the weighting on the blades, but even after that, we've always of course had the noise of the air swooshing around.

Until now. We've only had our new remote controlled fan since about October last year, but we love it. Even on the highest setting it is almost completely silent, so smooth going round you can almost not hear a thing.

Ours is from an American company, who seem to have just a single UK supplier. We ordered over the phone and they were very helpful. If you're interested, this is ours :

I would say that the build quality seems far superior from anything we have bought before - and we've never bought cheap rubbish, we've always looked for the best we could find, but this seems a better brand than anything we've seen in the UK.

    HTH.
