Help! Digital Gas Meter reading is blank!

We have just received an estimated gas bill will is quite high (we are moving and have not been using the gas).

So we have just tried to check the meter reading against the bill and there is no display on the meter!

Does anyone know if a digital meter still holds the readings even if the display is not working?

I am really concerned now as I was hoping to phone through the meter reading tomorrow to have the bill amended.

    It should do.

You need to phone National Grid and ask them to come and replace the battery.
  • The Meter will still hold the reading when the battery is changed no probs
  • So National Grid own the meter then? So will the supplier wait for us to confirm the meter reading before paying in these circumstances?

I assumed that even these meters were powered from the mains like the analogue meters appear to be?
  • Best to raise a query with them and get the meter checked.

You need to contact your supplier- not National Grid. The supplier will then book their meter operator to come out and either fix or replace the meter.

It may depend on the type of meter you have, but my understanding is that if it's an E6 type and the battery fails, it has no record of usage.

As Joyful says, with this type of meter they don't replace the battery (which is quite easy) but they replace the meter if they've not all been phased out yet.

Expect a G4 replacement if you have an E6 presently

No gas meters are mains powered, not even the new smart ones will they will rely on a battery.

I would imagine that the last reading would be stored in non volatile memory.
