I'm pretty sure Wilkinson would be cheaper than B&Q for gardening stuff every time! They should be getting their garden supplies on the shelves very soon. Why not try asking on Freecycle? Or, get parents to start collecting the plastic packaging that mushrooms, tomatoes or similar veg that supermarkets love to over-pack!0

Agree with the comments re mushroom cartons, and any other opaque cartons veg comes in. They do not have drainage holes in the bottom, but this is not a bad thing - just remember to keep the soil damp (an old clean washing up liquid bottle is great for keeping seedlings moist - more water control).
What type of seeds/quantities are you hoping to grow?0 -
i think you can get a pack of 5 trays out of the £1 shop0

If you have Freecycle or a similar scheme in your area, you could ask for them and see if anyone can help you out, it would mean you would obviously have to do the fetching and they won't be new but after a clean they'd be fine and all importantly saving those pennies!Cabot (0%) left to pay £2455 let the overpayments commence!

Thanks everyone - will check out poundland - they didn't have them last time I was in but I guess they have more gardening stock now ;-)
Wilkinsons is more expensive £2 for 5 (rather than £2 for 8)
Freecycle is a non starter - I just don't have the time!
Mushroom containers are also a no go as the kids are doing a horticultural qualification that requires a standrad size tray is used.
A more longterm project (next winter) will be to reuse some wood from pallets to mke seed trays of the required size.
Thanks everyone0 -
A letter to the parents asking if anyone has any they would like to donate? (purely working on the basis that many of us have sheds full of surplus gardening stuff that we're too idle to sort out and dispose of.) Or would that be too much hassle as well?
Our poundland doesn't have much in at the moment, but if you can wait a bit longer they do usually come in a bit closer to spring. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Why don't you go to local garden centres. We have done this and you could offer to put a little 'free advertising' their way by sponsoring a bed after them etc. Local garden centres etc in my experience will have lots of used seed trays pots etc lying around. We went to one and they had a 40ft polytunnel stacked high with pots, 'help yourself' they said. We came back with an absolute car load of seed trays, modules and even a couple of old strawberry planters!0
