For humours sake, nothing more. I wouldn't seriously consider that suggestion as a viable option.0 -
I know of a couple, that are able to save over £1,000 a month, they both receive high rate DLA, high rate care allowance, and are both on higher rate mobility. They are only claiming what they are entitled to, after years of working, they have never been so well off financially in there lives, there only problem is, that they are both so ill, that they can not spend the money, they are both house bound, have to have 24 hour carers, and are in pain 24 hours a day. I know for a fact that they would give everything back to have there health. The money dosent compensate. As the benefits they are claiming are not means tested, the money just continues to accrue in the bank, but I am sure they would rather be well than have money in the bank.
Hi there,
I'm in a somewhat similar situation to this and it isn't nice. I wish I had my health and my independence and it's just unfortunate that I don't. I do intend to work though, if I can, and I'm hopeful that my GP will sign me back off Employment and Support Allowance shortly so that I may go back to claiming Jobseekers Allowance and (hopefully) find employment before too long as I need to work, keeps me sane and gives me a purpose in life and a very powerful reason to live. I've lost that now I'm unemployed, horrible situation for me. Take care.0 -
If the Job Centre adviser told you that your benefit wouldn't be affected if you had savings up to £16,000 ... then you've been misadvised. And that means any overpayment which results could be treated as an "official error" and written off i.e. you won't be asked to repay it.
But it's a poor adviser who would have told you that. Can you be sure you didn't mishear what they said ?
As to just spending £2,500 on any old crap to get back under the limit, as our "new friend who only joined in January & who we've never met before" Incyder says, don't do that. They'll do you for "deprivation of capital" if you go down that road. Instead, establish the date your savings went over £6,000, get your bank statements together for the whole period from that date onwards, 'fess up and send them into DWP. You won't get into trouble for it.
Thank you very much for this excellent advice.
I'm going to try and visit my bank as soon as I possibly can and ask them to give me bank statements going back for the last 3-4 months as that's when I think I may have went over the £6,000 limit due to receiving this money from a relative in their will. I'm not a rich person by any means and I never thought I'd be in a situation such as this and so it's good to finally see that "light at the end of the tunnel" as it were. I'm a lot more reassured now after reading through your posting and I'm hopeful the DWP can see things from my point of view as I'd never have been able to save up that amount of money if I hadn't been working full time because even when in work the most I ever had was around £3,500 and that to me is a lot of money. I don't want to cause problems for the Jobcentre Advisor that told me this but I can point them out exactly as I know their name and what they look like. This person told me repeatedly that I have nothing to worry about when I brought up the subject of being left money in a will because they said you aren't affected until you have over £16,000 in savings. I wish you well

EJF, the employment support allowance has a work related group, if you're put into this after the medical you will get 6 sessions with an advisor to help you find work that is suitable for your disability. The support group is for people who are so disabled that work isn't an option.0

Thanks again GlasweJen.
I may very well qualify for the support group as I have a lifetime of requiring extra support but in truth, I'd much rather be in work and I'm hopeful my being on Employment and Support Allowance is just a temporary situation until I can get well again. I have no problem meeting with advisors because I've been working with a Disability Employment Advisor for a little while now due to my claim for Jobseekers Allowance and felt like I was really starting to get somewhere with this lady. It's just a shame that I'm having personal problems at this moment in time but let's hope I can return to JSA before too long. My GP refuses to allow me to work right now and I have no choice but to claim Employment and Support Allowance. I'm hopeful for the future though, maybe things will work out alright for me

I'd give anything not to be in agony every day, to be able to walk unaided, even to run, to go out in the cold, to have complete health. Yet i am burdened with a degenitive disease which has no cure.
I hope you are grateful you have your health. This poster is asking for advice not being slatted for having this money0 -
Be careful going that route, could be seen as deprivation of capital.
Emphasis on the COULD be seen a deprivation of capital, usually deprivation of capital means spending on something you usually don't buy like a oil painting. It would be down to proof to prove you did not need a new telly.
I checked with my local office, and you can't put it into trust yourself, which is something i was thinking about.
One thing you could do if you have a flexible mortgage is pay some of it off. But be wary if you have a normal mortgage.
Myself and my wife are in the same boat as you, we have never had a penny from anybody in our lives before i got ill,
We quite easily live on 15k per year between us and we even quite easily save money on that amount.we also have lots of saving.
So because we don't live like chavs and pea our money up againt a wall we will be penalised.Child of a Fighting Race.0
