Getting NCD entitlement from Aviva

Don't know if anyone else has had a similar experience/difficulty as me getting the number of claim free years confirmed by Aviva?
I took a policy out with them last year and took with me 6 years no claims discount, for which I provided proof to Aviva. I have had no claims in the last year so I assumed I should have 7 years no claims discount. When my renewal notice came through it showed me as having 5 years NCD, but as Aviva only discount up to 5 years, this did not concern me too much; however, when I telephoned to request proof of all my claim free years, I was told that 'Aviva don't do that' and that they 'only provide proof of up to 5 years' which seems entirely wrong. The difference in quotes between 5 and 7 years is over £100. I have complained to Aviva, but if the call centre person is right, I don't hold out much hope of getting anywhere- if anyone can suggest any ideas how to get justice from Aviva I am all ears!!

Hi - presumably you could get a letter from Aviva showing you'd been claim free with them plus last years proof (if you still have it). Suspect a reasonable insurer would accept this. Who are your new ones?0

Ive got the same problem. I renewed with Tesco in November 2010 with what I thought would be 9+ years ncd (as I have had no claims in 30 years) having previously being insured with Aviva. Tesco asked for proof of ncd from insurer. Aviva sent a letter with 5 years ncd. Now Tesco want another £79.00 to cover the shortfall. So Im not a happy bunny. Another case of Rip off Britain at its best.
So anyone out there with nine or more years ncd watch out who you renew with and make sure they will keep your ncd.I'm not tight with money,just careful :rolleyes:

I think Blueamigo you may have missed the point of the Aviva letter. I just receved one, unprompted, about 2 months after buying the new policy. Yes, I too have had some 10+ yeard NCB apparently reduced to 5, but it gets far worse that that...
To quote the letter... it starts "Folowin your recent enquiry.." (I made none) "Please note that if the policy is still in force and a claim arises before the exiry date stated above, this will effect the no claims discount entitlement and will invalidate the no claims discount amount given."
In the past, if I had an accident, it would impact future renewal charges. What this appeard to indicate is that if I have an accident, Aviva will charge me an additional sum on my current year insurance. Effectively by sending this unsolicited and fairy innocent looking letter, they reserve the right to revisit the current year fee!
I'd be interested to hear if others share my conclusion, or have had an accident following receipt of this letter.0 -
Your conclusion is wrong.
Your letter gives you your NCD level at the end of your current policy year. If you make a claim between now and the expiry date then the NCD level mentioned in the letter would no longer apply as it would be reduced pending the outcome of the liability for the claim. That's all they are saying - nothing to do with increasing your premium before the policy year ends.0 -
I had exactly same position as the OP, joined with 6 but renewal said 5 (so should now be 7) and initially they said they'd send a letter of bonus earned. Chased it up and they then said they don't send those kind of letters but would divulge the info to new insurers if they called them.
My new insurer claimed my renewal only shows 5 years so want the shortfall and after a call I did manage to get things sorted out.
They called Aviva who said I joined them with 6 years but didn't provide proof (I did) so they gave me 5 years (something stinks here) so my new insurer called my last 2 previous insurers to clarify.
Turned out I was undervaluing my bonus and they could see I actually have 8 years no claim, bonus!!!
Lesson learned.....no more Aviva - ever again!

Always keep copies of NCB earned letters from all your insurance companies. I'm with Aviva and they state 5 years NCB, but last year I was with LV and still have the letter stating 9 years. Should I move from Aviva the LV letter will be useful.0

We've just had exactly the same thing for DH.
His renewal states 6 yrs although he's been driving for 30 yrs and never made a claim!
When I've queried it in the past I was told that the max you can claim is 5 yrs so never thought any more about it.
But this year I've found that lots of companies take more than 5yrs but we cannot trace back all the lost years.
The same will apply to me when I renew in september :mad:0
