If you have the 98 CD, there is a file called defrag.inf on it..
in the \tools\mtsutil folder. If you right click on it and choose install, it should do a defrag at the next boot before anything else that loads interferes with the disk (which causes defrag to constantly restart).
Or do it in safe mode.
If you dont have the CD, save this to defrag.inf and right click on it and install..

Thanks for all the help. In summary, you think one option is to put the pc in 'safe mode' before starting the defrag prog??0

.... why does my defrag programme never finish? It could on for days, chuntering away to itself if I let it, never reaching anywhere near the end. I just let it run once a year and cancel it after a few hours of grind. No idea whether this is a good idea or not.
Hi, I've always experienced the above too, until recently, a friend told me that it could be my screen saver causing the problem. He said that as soon as the screen saver kicks in, this stops the defrag.
Due to serious probs on my PC, have had to completely restore windows ME, I don't have a screen saver and have managed to complete disc defrag 100% for the first time ever!0 -

A screensaver would cause this as its a running process. :beer:0
