Male dog contraceptive implant

Hi all, just after a little advice and reassurance I think, in a few weeks time we will be looking after a friends female rott for upto 6 months , I have a 2 year old male rott and he hasnt been "done" neither has she as they want to breed her later on.we have decided that the best course of action to take is prob to let my male have the contraceptive implant that lasts for 6 months to save any unwanted pregnancy.Have any of you had this done to your dog and if so how was your dog after?.Many thanks for any words of reassurance you can offer.

I assume that they could still mate if she came into season, just that he would be infertile.

Far better to keep them apart. Single beds and cold lino inbetween.

She will more than likely have a false pregnancy if they do which can be quite distressing for a b itch.

Thank you , I was worried about this kind of thing.Keeping them apart at night wont be a problem as she sleeps in her crate and he in his basket in the hallway, she will be in the kitchen.she has not long had her season so hopefully we might not get another till near the end of her stay.

Be aware that dogs can mate through a crate. If she does come into season your dog may scent mark in the house, howl all night and go off his food for a week or so. It'll be the longest week of your life.

Ask them to talk to their vet about delaying her season.

Again thank you, I didn't know they could do that.I will speak to them later and suggest this.I dont want to cause and stress to either dog and definately dont want to spend a week or so of howling dogs,

  • Would it not make sense for both dogs to be given a contraceptive - smallest possible chance of anything happening and will stop you having to deal with her season (mess, other dogs harassing her etc).

Well I have spoken to my friend who in turn phoned her vet, explained the situation and he has recommended delaying her season, so we are still going to get the implant done for him as well , better safe than sorry;). Thank you to both of you for your imput and suggestions.

Is that the suprelorin implant? I looked into it for my rott boy when I was considering castration. He can be a bit nervy and I wasn't sure whether neutering him and removing the testosterone which gives him a bit of confidence would turn him into a nervous wreck. The suprelorin implant mimics the effect of neutering and can help with behavioural issues, sexualised behaviour etc It also shrinks the testicles!

I haven't personally used the female version on my dogs either but have heard of this leading to really messed up future seasons so aqs your friend is wanting to breed at a later date there may be complications due to delays or irregularity of seasons. It would be worth reading up on that before making any decisions.

Unless you are really reckless (and I hope there aren't many reckless rott owners around) do you need to do anything? You will know when the b1tch comes into season and will have anything from 9-20 days before she is fertile. the fertile period is very short and can be managed. If you can put up with howling for a few days keep them seperate and if not could you kennel your dog for the few days that the !!!!! will be receptive?

For me this would be the best solution rather than chemically altering one or both of the dogs reproductive systems/cycles for a couple of days inconvenience. Obviously it is up to yourself but please do a bit of research on the side effects of chemical interventions.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!

Thankfully I would like to think that we are responsible Rotti owners but I know the type you are thinking of;).My boy I reckon is a different dog dressed up in rott clothing, he is pretty timid and scares easily. He is a real baby and certianly doesnt fit the Rott stereotype thankfully.I think I need to think and look into this somemore before making a final decission. My boy could go to my sisters at that time if we get it from the b i t ch , she has his sister , she has been spayed so no worries there and he loves going to her house.((She allows them to get away with stuff he knows I wont so its like a holiday to him , he doesnt bring the naughty behaviour home though thankfully)

  • I believe you are referring to the Tardec injection? Chemical castration can be hit and miss at the best of times. Just google it and you'll see lots of comments for and against, TBH you only know when it's been tried, but it needs to be given in advance.

The ONLY way you are ensured that they will not produce puppies is that one of them is neutured; which as the b1tch is not going to be a permanent member I can see why you wouldn't be going down this street. But if you do not intend for your dog to be used, then I strongly urge you to have him 'done'.

If they want to breed her (and I dearly hope that she will have ALL the relevant health checks for hip and elbow displaysia, heart murmer, etc, as well as being KC registered, and have chosen a suitable stud) and there's a chance she may come into season whilst on her 'hols' then IMO, someone will need to be with the dogs 24-7. It only takes a second and they can tie, 9 weeks later will be another litter of puppies looking for homes.

She should be crated to ensure he cannot get to her at times, for example if you need to go to the loo, or to bed for the night. You can also crate your male for short peiods of time to try and calm him down, as if you're not already aware, males rotties WILL whine, howl and bark for anything from the day she comes into season to the day she finishes, which can be for up to 3/4 weeks dependant on what the b1tches seasons are like. Some do not eat for that time, some can show signs of aggression towards other males aswell (if you have any other male dogs in the house) You could kennel him outside, but this is probably not stop any whining, barking, howling, just ensures he cannot get to the b1tch. Plus, they like to wee up everything, they will not care what they !!!! their leg up!

I cannot stress how much they should NOT be left together if she comes into season, if you do use chemical castration, there is still a chance that she could concieve, but then your male knows what it's all about, and will most likely try it on again with other females, so could become a bit of a handful.

You can also give the !!!!!es an injection to delay seasons, not something I would reccommend, but it's another possibilty.
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money
Couldn't do it without coming here every day ;)

People have mentioned the dog may whine or bark..... I've seen a door that was ripped to pieces whilst the owner was at work so that the dog could get to the b itch that was in kitchen, in season.

The b itch was given the 'morning after' jab, which at the time had a 98% chance of being sucessful.

The resulting pup was named two-percent!
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
