My son is 11 and a small 11 (second smallest in his primary school class) now he is at senior school he wants to take the bus to school. Its a 10 mile journey but a straight bus BUT it goes across two counties.
Our county does not give a 'saver card' child should just be charged child price return. The other county does a saver card - but you can only get it if you live in that county.
Practically every day they ask my son for his saver card EVEN when getting a return from our county WHERE YOU DONT NEED ONE. Today the bus driver charged him £5.50p return:mad:... it should be £2.35p ... my son is now scared of getting his ticket I have to go on with him while he pays - good job I did as he only had £5 on him... we have been charged standard before which is £3.90p... its so annoying when it should be £2.35p (am going to try and claim the overpay back)
Spoke to arriva and explained - they said my son should carry acopy of his passport with him. Well he was 2 when he had it done it looks nothing like him! My son is more likely to get confused for 9 or 10 than 16..... Its absolutely mad. We are scared if we get our son a weekly pass (£15) then they won't accept it due to him not having the saver card and he may get stranded.
We shall try tomorrow with a copy of his passport.
They wonder why people don't take public transport and drive... well its not hard really to work out when there is this much hassle over a simple journey.

It may be worth you getting a Citizen Card for him, this will prove his age and ID (and continue to do so for some years)

Is the county where you son attends school Hertfordshire? Others have complained about the Herts SaverCard scheme and the need for all children to carry this to obtain child fares, even when an 11-year old obviously would look like they're under 16.
However have you not considered buying a season ticket such as the Student Saver? Surely this would be cheaper and easier?
You're certainly right about this all being a barrier to bus travel!0 -
Maybe give him £5.50 of "emergency fare" and/or a photocopy of proof of age?0
-
Do they not do weekly tickets? Kids round here have them."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

Exactly: a season ticket, be it weekly, monthly or term time etc.0
