We're changing the advance notice for collecting Direct Debits
If you pay us by Direct Debit, we have to tell you before we collect it, or before we make changes (like the amount, or how often and when we collect the money). For collecting it, we're changing the advance warning we give you from ten to six days. You don't have to do anything. And the change doesn't affect the date you usually pay your Direct Debit. We'll still collect it either two weeks after you get your bill or on the date agreed with you – depending on how your Direct Debit is set up.

(took from email i just received, although don't know why i'm set up for paperless billing as that's one thing I .. CAN'T ... stand)

edit - and they are upping our direct debit from £26 to £54 ... !!!!!!

Do remember, this doesn't mean you are now only getting 5 days to check your bill - they are referring to the debit being taken, counted from the BILLING date. Since BT's bills do not arrive instantly, by the time the bill arrives, you will be told of the debit amount on (or probably just after) the funds have left your account.

EVEN IF your bill is totally inaccurate, if there is less than 3-4 working days between your complaint being passed to BT, there is no way your debit can be prevented hitting your account. You may be able to reverse it once it has gone, but for many the damage will have been done.

Progress? DD's make a fool of the consumer - and BTs customers are going to be a test bed for other utilities to do the same.
  • Quelle surprise.

I'd rather leave all the doors and windows open in my house when I'm out in case someone wants to check the meter when I'm not there than give BT a direct debit mandate.
