Unclaimed Payment

I bought a christmas present last night on e-bay (organised I know) and made my normal payment through paypal. However, when I look at the item now in ebay, it is showing up as payment pending through paypal and has a symbol that looks like an hour glass. If I look in paypal, the status is showing up as unclaimed.

What is happening here, as the seller has just sent me an invoice?

Thanks in advance

  • Did you pay using a debit/credit card through PayPal? If so, it seems likely that the seller you sent payment to only has a basic PayPal account and therefore needs to upgrade to a premier account in order to claim the funds.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • Yeah, razor is right -

what i tend to do is send the seller a polite message that payment has been sent but showing as pending and please could they check both they're PP account and the email addy's they have linked to it as they will need to manually accept the payment.

Usually people are really greatful for this peice of advice as they wont know about the payment until they check their email address - it never states it to them on the ebay screen that they have a pending payment. Someone was kind enough to give me the advice when i was new so now i just try to do the same for others.

My suggestion is check if he is a new seller by his feedback and profile pages - that should give you a better idea.

If they are dont seem new to paypal/ebay - then they will have to take it up with paypal themselves because chances are they have more than one email addy linked to it and its not working or something along those lines.

    Hope that helps!

Also a payment will show as unclaimed if email address it has been sent to has not been registered with paypal. This happens to me quite often seller types in there email address incorrectly when filling in the paypal payment address on the listing form.
Check the email address you have sent paypal payment to against the email address you have for them via ebay (should be on the invoice) and look for a typo.

Oh dear I have just sold my first two items on Ebay and havr now read this thread and dont understand it!!. The first item I sold I got notification from the buyer with a link to the paypay transaction but it is sitting as 'uncleared' do I need to do anything further. The other is showing as an instant payment and does not appear to require clearing. Am I doing everything right so far? I have just packaged up the second purchase as the payment was instant!

Oscar, it sounds as though the 'uncleared' payment is an echeque. These take a long time to clear.

It might be worth emailling the buyer, saying 'Hi and thanks for your purchase. Just to confirm that your payment is in echeque form, which may take around ten days to clear. I will dispatch as soon as it has cleared. Thank you.'

If it is an echeque careful saying 10 days to the buyer as I have known these to take up to 3 weeks. There will be a an estimated clearing date on the details of payment on the paypal page ..... but this is estimated and not written in stone.

Yes it is an echeque. They have asked me to let them know when its in the post. I emailed them at the time to say that it will be posted as soon as the payment is cleared. I did wonder why the estimate date was 14 Nov?.
