Cat Flap Help

Hi
I don't know if anyone can offer some advice here. I had a magnetic cat flap for a long time but then other cats kepts breaking in and nicking the food.
We then installed an infrared cat flap, but cats still managed to get in (think my cat would stand beside the flap which released the infrared) My cat is 16+ so when he was howling at night I put it down to him loosing his marbles (vet said same), but I realise now, it was due to these other cats coming in at night, as he is at another property temporarily and not howling at all and using cat litter.
I need to replace the existing cat flap before I bring him back to my home. Can anyone recommend anything. The infrared cat flap is completely broken now so its currently locked.
Sorry for the waffle. Any ideas much appreciated or do I bring him back and just have litter tray. He is not at all bothered about not going out, he just likes to sleep or sit on your Lap. bless him.
Thanks
D

we had same problem as you- unwanted visitors in the dead of night, parading around the house, nicking our cats food, one even came in and got on the end of the bed snuggled up to my husbands feet!!
gave up in the end. the cat flaps now blocked up and if she wants to go in/out she has to ask. I did post a little while ago because she was pestering me in the middle of the night to go in & out, it was driving me mad at the time. However, it did'nt take long to establish a new routine, she goes out around 8.30 ish, comes back after about half an hour and then she's in for the night. Theres' no litter tray in our house, she always goes outside:j infact, I would say she's a little angel because she holds on till morning and is'nt even desperate to go out after brekkie, she usually goes out again about 8am- good luck !0 -
Don't have this problem as my cats take no prisoners if another cat some much as comes into the garden. If you can accomodate a litter tray then that might be the way to go, certainly in the short term - I use one of the covered ones with a charcoal filter and entry flap which stops smells and flies etc.0

A microchip cat flap might be a solution, there's two types available - Pet Porte and Sureflap. They're not cheap but worth looking into.0

Thanks for the advice, sorry but I had to laugh at the thought of the unwanted guest snuggled up to your husbands feet. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I did get up one night to a big black thing on the landing, what a shock, and another evening I got in from work to a startled guest, so I think they come in during the day while I am at work, they prob curl up on they settee, LOL.
Thanks again, I will prob go with the cat litter idea.

You could go to the expense of fitting chip-reading cat flap but at 16 years old maybe he would be happy being a house cat?
My oldies kept getting beaten up so they spent the last 3 or 4 years of their lives as house cats and didn't seem to be unhappy about it at all. They used a covered litter tray which I emptied every day, although they did tend to track pellets and dust about a little, so a handheld 'dustbuster' vac came in handy. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

Thanks so much for the advice. I think I may well keep him as a house cat and get a decent litter tray with cover etc. To be honest, he only goes out to go to the loo and in his temporary accommodation doesn't seem to mind not going out at all.
Thanks again everyone

Just remembered I picked my covered litter tray up from Argos quite reasonably priced with a scoop and filters fitted. Might be worth checking out their website as the same thing from a pet shop might be a lot more expensive. (I also managed to pick a second up from a charity shop for a fiver, but this was pure luck:))0
