LOL - I think someone needs to read my posts. I was after ideas for an AMICABLE settlement and it seems I may have reached it without any help. I never suggested "doing a runner" - just witholding payment if needed to aid the negotiation so that I can counter claim.

Still cant understand why several of you bothered commenting, you need to get out more.

You need to learn to write what's in your head in that case. I'm sure I read in your OP that you were considering handing keys back and waiting to get sued. Was that a dream?
  • I read somewhere that I can hand the keys back, stop future rent payments and wait to get sued for missing payments, which would then be reduced if the property has been re-let which the landlord needs to show that he has attempted to do. Sounds a little bit risky to me.

Is this the bit you are referring to and haven't read properly?

LOL - off you go to be judgemental to the next person who asks a valid question. Tip: Read all the words in the posts, not just what you want to read.

Oh, and its really sweet, albeit a little sad, that you are all thanking each others posts. Bless! You need to get out a LOT more. I could say thank you for your help and good advice, but that would just be sarcastic wouldn't it! Byeeeeeeeeeee

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but this isn't really a complete resolution yet, is it? It would be interesting if you could come back here and post when a new tenant has been found - hopefully very soon but what if it isn't? I assume that you'll then pay the full rent and all bills for the remainder of the contract - but if you don't have a problem with this possibility then I don't actually see what the previous argument has been about.

None of the posters above (who were all offering genuine advice) was suggesting that you'd have to continue paying even if another tenant could be found. However, unfortunately this isn't a given, far from it. It's good that the flat is being advertised from today, but the LL and LA don't really have much of an incentive to actually find a tenant before May, do they? As I see it, in reality they've given you nothing, other than an assurance that your responsibilities will end IF a new tenant is found early. That's a big if.

It's good to hear that you've agreed to fulfil your legal obligations, which is what previous posters have advised you to do - but I fail to see why they should therefore be "eating humble pie"
  • I got out of my contract by advertising and finding new tenants which were acceptable to the landlords, my having advised them that I wished to give notice and hopefully not give the required notice period (it overlapping with my new property). I found great tenants and moved out on a date of my suiting. Everyone was happy and the landlord had no down time.

A sensible landlord in your position should really take some compensation and let you out of your contract or negotiate some exit route. As to your job, I would have factored the costs into the new salary etc.

Were you bullied as a child?
  • Bless - I'll ask you that when you've grown up.

    Ah fank you!

I'm guessing you not answering my Q means it's true? Thought as much and explains a lot!

Ta ta - off to cubs now! Dib dib dib :D
  • It makes me wonder sometimes why know-it-alls waste their time and ours by coming on here asking questions and seeking advice when they patently don't need it. And being so odiously unpleasant while they're at it, too.
