Wifi Prob (Yes, I know asked many times)

Ok, I have searched the forum and I have set up wifi connections before (hense this post).................. Brother recently got a new Netgear WPNT834 RangeMAX, asked me to set it up, no problems I thought.

I cannot get his shiny Sony Viao to see the router, or rather it appears in the list of connections but I cannot get it to connect or to even see it (Windows Refresh Wireless Connection List).

Initially set the router up to broadcast the SSID, no encryption, no security, no access list. Disabled the laptop firewall (rather it wasn't on), tried to refresh the laptop wireless list, no joy. Manually added in the router details, no joy. Added some basic security (WPA) on both settings, no joy.

Currently the Wireless property page has "Windws to manage wireless connections" ticked. Was wondering if this needs to be unticked (am a little hesitant to do this as its a works laptop and not sure how that may affect other setting/configs). Having said that he said that he could pick up a wifi connection at work, so obviosuly the card / comms does appear to work.

What am I missing? Its doing my 'ed in

So you have connected the laptop via ethernet and that's OK?
You mention it's a work's laptop; does the admin setup definitely allow connection to other wifi networks?
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

are you sure it's broadcasting the ssid?

how come it was in the list one minute, and then not?

if you can see it in the list, and can't connect, it will probably be a mismatched wpa key.

can you see anyone elses listed? Is there a wireless on/off switch on the laptop?

The firewall is probably a red herring..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Hmm, definitely thinking Group Policy has been set. Are you loging into the latop with an account that is member of the Administrator's Group or on a restricted user account?

Could be a good point. Haven't actually checked out the user profile. Will try that.

Sure, no, other than it appeared in the list of connections. Note no wifi connection appeared in the actual 'refresh wireless connection list'.

Doesnt appear and dissapear. As above, via control pannel, network, connections, wireless it appeared. In the 'refresh wireless conection list' from the taks bar wifi icon nothing is displayed.

Unlikely, thought about this and have re-entered (cut/paste from a single source) a number of times.

Wireless is on and no cannot see anyone else's wifi.

Works ok via lan and brother said he could see / connect to the works wifi connection. Will check out permissions / privilleges. Is there an easy way to see if the wifi has been locked down? I have manually added the wifi details ok but no joy atually seeing the network.

    Thanks for everyone's comments.

Yes, its down as automatic and 'connect if in range' (seeing as the laptop is next to the wifi at the mo should be ok).
