Redundancy after administration

My father-in-law has just been laid off in a shabby way, but the company he works for went into administration at the beginning of December. He continued to work for the same people but in the new "Phoenix" company. Would he automatically have tupe rights or does he have no employment protection? Any guidance would be helpful before we persuade him to talk to legals.
