Sony Vaio laptop-any good?

Hi, I'm just after some advice from people with superior knowledge;

I'm looking for a laptop at around £800-£900 and found what looks like a good one from sony:

http://vaio.sony-europe.com/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-FE31H&site=ite_en_GB&pageType=Overview&category=VN+FE+Series

(I have foung it cheaper on other sites - just want opinion on spec for that sort of price range)

Does this look like a good laptop? Does anybody know of any others in the same price range that have a better spec / quality?

Thanks.

Sony's are overpriced imo, and if this forum is anything to go buy, not the most reliable.

If you don't play games, then you could get a decent laptop for half the price.

I'm now using my second Vaio laptop and would definitely recommend them. The first one I unfortunately dropped on the hearth, and although slightly 'bent', it didn't stop the machine working.

Never had any serious problems with Sony, access the internet through wifi, used loads at home, always on the 'net.

    I would recommend, good luck
  • As albertross said, Sony's tend to be overpriced. But work well. I started on a Vaio about 7 years ago and had 3 happy years with it.

I'm now a very happy Toshiba Qosmio G30 owner. You'll probably find a laptop with more bells and whistles for £900 than you would a sony for £900.

IMHO go for the Sony if you want to be sure you are getting a good laptop, otherwise shop around.

I am still on my first & had no problems with it, it's about 3 years old and runs well. Hope to get a new one at some point! I would recommend Sony Vaios.

ive got the fj1z/w and i loveeee it!
have to take mine to uni so gets nocked about on the tube only time ive had a problem with it sony picked it up from my house too it for repair and gave it back :D love the functionality, reliability would def recomend them
use all the programs i do on the computer and never had a problem or excessive slowness
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • that is the very laptop I am using. only had it a week, it is what my insurers replaced my previous one with.

only issue I have is that FireFox 2.0 keeps hanging. which I assume is laptop as i have no issues with my PC running it.

It is very nice but probably over specified for what i need. I think I will get a TV tuner card for it though.

As others have said if you want cheaper there will be others, Sony like to maintain a "Premium" brand image with prices to match.
    I have a cunning plan!

I love the sonys because of the screen and the battery. They also tend to have everything built in. My place of work is dead set on Dells which I find a pain since the battery life is awful, the screen is second rate and the portable machines have external optical drives. Sony every time for me.

i've been using a sony vaio for about 7 yrs its old but works a treat,
the screen still looks as good as any of the new laptops i look at,
only thing thats gone on it is the battery, so i just keep it plugged in now
if i had the money i'd go for another sony
  • Thanks a lot guys, i didnt think i was going to get many replies at first. I think your comments have confirmed what i thought - I may have to pay a bit more but will get a high quality laptop.
Think ill probly go for this one, but can't help thinking i might need 2gb ram if i want it to last a longer time?
Anybody know how & how much it would be to upgrade it? Can you customise with sony?
