not covered by warranty

Does anyone think that i should complain about this. In April 2010 i bought a Jaguar which was 4 years old paying £13000 from a jaguar dealership with a 1 year warranty. The car was serviced before i bought it, due to a few health problems this year i have only done 3800 miles at most. I have been told that both the rear wheel ball joints[i think] have excessive play and need replacing. This is not covered under the warranty, normal wear and tear they said. Does anyone think i should argue the case due to the fact the car was serviced before i bought it and the mileage i have done since buying the car. Any thoughts would be welcome.

  • It is possible that there was insufficient play in the ball joints for the wear to be picked up at the last service.

Rather than complaining per se, see if you can speak to the service manager and ask them for a goodwill payment bearing in mind mileage etc.

Because it was 4 years old what they've provided you with is in affect an extended manufactures warranty, this will cover slightly less than a new cars 3 year warranty. For example if the clutch goes within the first 3 years most manufacturers will replace it, if you take out an extended warranty they probably won't replace it.

If it was me though I would kick up a fuss seeing that you've only had it 10 months, they try to say most issues fall under 'wear and tear' but if you keep on to them and drive it home that its only done 3800 miles you might get somewhere. Jag dealers are usually pretty good.

Do you mind me asking how much they want for the repair?

Hi Ryanm i phoned the garage and spoke to the service manager, he was quite nice and explained that yes the car had been serviced prior to purchase and even though my mileage was low the car has done 60000 miles and its still down to wear and tear. The only good news was that the fault was the off side and near side rear shock bushes not as first posted. For this job they quoted £275. Looked on the internet and you can buy these two bushes for £30, my brother works for the AA guess what his next job is.[apparently if you know what you are doing its now more than 90 minutes work.]
