Count the beeps and look them up on the motherboard manufactures website, there you should find an error code or clue as to the issue.0

It's likely to be a loose or faulty hardware component. If you could imagine the BIOS beeps as morse code can you describe them i.e. 3 short beeps, 1 short + 2 long, etc?0

Hi thanks to you both. My friend thinks it is 2 short beeps and 1 long beep, or could be other way round 1 long beep and 2 short beeps.
It is an HP Entertainment Laptop Computer and is exactly 2 yrs old. Guarantee just run out!!!
Thanks0 -
HPs using AWARD BIOS use 1 long, 2 short to indicate a problem initialising video/display which would fit with the black screen.
Assuming it's fixed graphics and not modular it could mean a fairly costly repair. It might be worth getting checked just to make sure any components related to video (even memory) are firmly secure and sufficient cooling is available to them, including the GPU. Either way it's going to be a shop job and will most likely be considered beyond economical repair if the GPU has failed.
If it's modular then you may be able to get a replacement display module fitted. It's still best to rule out the simpler problems before writing it off though.0 -

I've done a little bit of Googling and if your friends laptop is a DV6xxx series you might want to have a look at this http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447626+1294763126080+28353475&threadId=11476590
