New Mattress

My daughter is 11 years old and suffers night time wetting.
We are having help with an enurisis specialist which is going well.

We are in receipt of income support and on a low income and my daughters mattress i have discovered to day is extremely wet, and smelly. I was wondering if there is any help in getting a used one that someone no longer needs or money available from a charitable organization that can help with the cost of a new one.

I don't want my daughter to be picked on because she smells. She is struggling at school already. But i am not in a financial position to be able to buy one.:embarasse

You can usually pick up mattresses from Freecycle, but it sounds like some suitable protection for the bed would be a good investment?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • we have a protective sheet and she still wets through, thats why i was suprised to find the mattress so wet. will look on freecycle thank you :)
  • Maybe you have a local charity shop eg Scope or a Hospice shop that has a furniture warehouse where you could get one cheaply. Once you do replace it, a good waterproof cover would preserve it.
  • As you are on Income Support you could apply for money from the SOcial Fund . There are three sorts, and I can't quite rememebr the exact eligibility criteria for each one. They are Community Care Grant, Budgeting Loan, or - more likely - Crisis Loan. Loans have to be repaid, but at a very low rate od deductions from your benefits.

The OP will not qualify for a Crisis Loan in these circumstances. Whilst the current bedding is far from ideal, it would not be deemed an emergency. A Budgeting Loan may be offered.

  • I echo what other poster's have said. Freecycle can be great at times like this, however maybe you have something you could sell on ebay to get together some funds to buy a replacement? It is amazing what sells on there, often I find junk I would normally throw away sells quite well!

    Good Luck :)
  • If urine is going through a waterproof protective sheet, than a new mattress would be a bad idea as it will soil the new bed also.

Have you tried nappies for older children? You can also get the mattress pads you get at the hospitals to put on her bed which may help.

The specialist would be the best person to ask as maybe different treatment is needed.

To get rid of the smell for the time being use white vinegar to wipe the mattress. Just soak a cloth with the vinegar and soak the mattress.

The OP isnt wanting a brand new mattress, not sure nappies would be good for the daughter phycologically.

So what do you suggest? The OP has confirmed that the current mattress is protected but is still getting soaked in urine. Buy a new mattress and exactly the same thing will happen...
