Today me and my flatmate recieved a quaterly electric bill from Scottish Power. We moved into this relatively new 2 bed 1 bath single fuel flat in June 2010, have been paying £65 direct debit at Scottish Power suggestion. Had a meter reading in June when we moved in and had one a couple of weeks ago to get an up-to-date bill.

The bill we've recieved today is for £2000........:eek::eek:

I'm at a loss to see how even if running every appliance in the flat all the time we're in it (which we don't) two working people can spend £2400 on electricity in 6 months.... £400 a month!

The only response we get from Scottish Power is that we need to pay 25 % of the bill immediately and set up a direct debit to clear the rest.

Any advice/explanations as to what might be going on?

cheers

Are you on a standard 24/7 tariff or an E7 tariff?
What type of heating, hot water heating do you and how many hours per day is it on?

Keep a close eye on your meter and hence the consumption being recorded.

You may find imeasure helpful in keeping a record.

Hopefully that'll help you get to the bottom of things :)

    Hi davidgad

Obvious question first - Have you checked that the start reading being used on the bill is the same as the meter reading you provided at the time you moved in? Also that the final meter reading used matches what is currently showing on your meter?

Does the meter serial number on the bill match the meter serial number on your meter for the property?

If you have checked all this and everything is in order and your meter has recorded this level of electricity since June, then you can arrange for the meter to be tested for accuracy (cost of around £50 which would be returned with interest if the meter is found to be faulty).

Do you have anything in the property which you may not think consumes a large amount of electricity but actually does? i.e Plug in heaters, large fish tank, etc. I wont ask if you have a swimming pool or jacuzzi.

You may wish to speak with our energy efficiency team to review the electrical applicances being used in the property to see if they can identify an area of concern. They can be contacted on 0800 33 22 33.

I would record your meter readings over a 24-hour period to see how many units are being recorded per day and see if this matches with the level of consumption shown in the bill.

I would be surprised at this level of consumption from June even if you have storage heaters in the property as you would not have been using them for this full period.

Let me know if you would like me to investigate this for you or if you have any further questions.

    Kind Regards
