EDF elec bill just quadrupled!!!

Please can anyone help? i been with EDF for nearly a year and have allways paid about 20 a month for my electricity... i joined through 1 of the comparison sites on here.. and because it was through the net.. u got discounted prices on energy units...
My prices per unit when i joined were stated as 10.62p for the first 900 units and then 5.10p thereafter..

just got a bill from them tghis morning saying that my direct debit was going from 20 a month up to 80!!!
Phoned em up to see what was goin on and they say they took a meter reading the other day and have adjusted the price accordingly,,,

Now when i sighned up,, one of the reasons u got discounted prices was that they never sent anyone to do a reading, it was left to me to do all that... so why suddenly they doin it?
Plus when i asked what my unit price was.. i was told its about 18p a unit for the first 250 and 10p after that??? plus was told i had never been on a 10.62 / 5.10p tarrif since even wnen i joined them??? even though im holding a contract that states otherwise???

please can anyone give me some idea whats goin on.. :0(

thnx..

P.S. if anyone also joined the "internet only" account that they offerd back last year.. could u just nip onto your account online and lemme know what prices u are being charged for u elec and gas units please? very much appreiciated....

thnx!

    hi.

i switched to edf in march. i started off paying £20 per month for elec, and £30 for gas.

got an elec bill on 17/10/06 and i owe them £46.39. im on the standard internet tarrif. first 168 units are 9.9p, then after that they are 6.65p.

anyway, i just recently upped my dd's to £30 elec and £40 gas.

hope this helps, aint got gas figures handy...

have u actualy checked on your online account to see if the 9.9p and 6.65p are correct? seems about what mibne is meant to be,, but when i spoke to the Customer services im told im on 18p !! and have been pretty much since i joined.. :0(

oh and is the 9.9p and 6.65 before or after VAT ? cheers :)

Be aware that tariffs will slightly differ depending on the region and tariff version (relates to when you signed up). Not sure if your rates are correct for your region and tariff version, but if you applied for the fixed price plan, that moves you onto the more expensive standard tariff I think.

For example, on Std Internet MDD - Midlands (assume v1, joined feb 2005), between May-August 2006 we were charged 8.77p for first 224, then 5.92p (exc. VAT). Think we only had a DD increase for gas and after our first winter. So assume it takes into account our likely winter usage, although does mean for the warmer months we are in credit. The online reading can be done so a bill is not left as an estimate and instead is a customer estimate. But we also still get our meter read from time to time.

You should check your old bills (should be available online) and check what you have been charged all along. If its true that they put you on a higher tarif than you signed up for you should lodge a complaint and ask for a refund.

As for them reading meters. All companies do have meter readings done at some point to keep a check on the accuracy of customer readings for one thing. If you have been giving the correct readings and they read your meter correctly it should not affect your bills at all.

Its also important to realise that your bill has not quadrupled, your payments have. That is completely different. If you have been underpaying then EDF are entitled to increase the DD to cover the shortage.
Now if you have been overcharged all along, as looks likely, then that is a different kettle of fish. But it should have made no difference as your charges should have reflected this higher tarif all along.

I think this is firstly a tarif problem and secondly a meter reading problem. If their up to date meter reading is right then you can't complain about it. If the tarif is wrong, you can.
    Regards
