lick of paint..what colour

Options
hi there

we have had our house on the market since last june, had viewers but no offers.

its now about time that the house needs a new lick of paint, the way i look at it, win win situation, new paint and helps sell, but if not least the house looks nice for us to live in....on this issue then, cuz it dont look very good on the selling front, what colour shall we paint?

at the moment, the house is painted everywhere in magnolia, but would it be ok to change the colour to suit us or better to paint still magnolia? not planning on major colour change, but like a lilac in bedroom, a redish wall in the living room to match curtains etc? or would be better off just painting it magnolia

manythanks

Well plum walls and doors with yellow gloss windows and skirting would be eyecatching.
But stick to magnolia everywhere as it offends nobody and is easy to touch up.
New dulux white gloss on doors and skirting looks nice but allow a week of windows open (when possible) to get rid of the smell completely.

A hint of colour wouldn't do much harm but I would say nothing more than a hint. Neutral is the way to go for selling, but there is a whole palette of neutrals out there so it doesn't have to be one-shade magnolia throughout.

DO NOT go for bold colours though. That's unlikely to be much use in tempting buyers - unless they share your taste. And bold colours are so much harder to paint over (says the girl who succeeded in selling the house with the mustard coloured hall - but everywhere else was fairly neutral!)

White ceilings, magnolia walls. You can't go wrong with that combo.

if you do want some colour on the walls, you could do what we'll have in our rented place (once i get round to it lol), get some canvas from an art supply shop, 10x10 inch squares ish, and paint them completely in the colour you want and hang on the walls.
arty and colourful so you're not staring at boring cream walls, but prospective buyers won't have to worry about anything but a couple of holes in the wall :)
doesn't seem impressive written down but i saw it once on changing rooms or some such and looked really good, plus you can then change the colours when you fancy dead easy x x

As evoke says: Light colours make the rooms look bigger!! (NB Try & chuck out/hide as much other stuff (furniture, etc etc) as possible - again it makes the place look bigger.

So, magnolia & White - OK??

If you have reddish curtains then a reddish chimney breast would be fine but a whole wall can be dominating. Pictures would help break up areas and give you a homely feel.

Liliac in the bedroom could split opinion, but on just one wall or getting some printed wallpaper for the wall behind the bed could be a good compromise.

I have lots of netural colours but they are shades which I find more relaxing then bland magnolia.
