Grease The Musical commenced in the year 1971 at the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. By 1980 when it was closed, it had already become the longest runner in Broadway history, performing more than 3388 times. After arriving in the UK in 2007, it has already been played more than 1000 times and entertained above 900,000 people.
Grease is a a beautiful story of teenage life in America during the Fifties and a sweet love affair. It focuses on a group of ten teenagers with a lead couple, Sandy and Danny, who study at the Rydell High School (imaginary). The story takes audiences into the mental turmoil the teenagers go through as part of the changing American lifestyle. It is also about a sweet love affair between Sandy and Danny which goes through a few bumps before finally settling down into some of the best romantic music ever to have hit theatre. Grease is packed with all time hits of the likes of Summer Night and You’re The One That I Want.
Grease tackles issues of the American young adults through critical themes like sexual exploration, teenage pregnancy, gang violence, class consciousness and love and rebellion. It was a raunchy, raw and aggressive show when it started but has been tamed over time to make it one of the most loved musicals in history.
