Hi Guys,
All the stuff i download, I'd like to play in my front room as opposed to watching on the PC like a true geek. Ideally i want a good DIVX player with a usb input so i can just plug in my hard drive.
does anyone have an idea of somet that will play this stuff please? Not bothered if i have to buy online or off the high street and obviously i'd like the lowest price
Many thanks
Neil

If you want the ultimate solution, take a look at Ziova.
They make two products which allow you to stream video, audio and images from your PC across a wireless network and play them on your TV. I believe it's the only unit which supports an HDMI interface if your TV has one.
They're made in Australia and will be marketed in Europe soon for around €299.
Mine's on order already.:j0 -
was thinking more along the lines of this.....

You could soft mod an old Xbox would cost you about £45 all in
£35 xbox, £2 controller to USB cable, £3 memory stick, £3 Splinter cell old version for softmod
Look at Show #106 (20 or 22 minutes into the show) of DL.TV they do a DivX verion. Mod take around 10 minutes.
Nice feature of the softmoded box is that you can also link to files on you home network so you would not even have to copy the files to an external HD. You can even run bittorrent or emule on the modded box.
It also loads backup games from HD (Xbox, SNES, Nintendo, Atari 2600) etc, search YouTube for Xbox Softmod or shout if you need any help with this option.
You can also use DVDRW and just reuse the disks, I've player from Lidl that has memory card support, this is basically USB, there are hardware mods to add external HD support.Seth.0 -

Tip: Divx is a brand name, so the dvdplayers that say Divx will have been authorised to do so. However, there are many dvdplayers that will play divx/xvid etc without actually saying "divx", they will just say "mpeg4".
Its been a while since I bought our mpeg4 dvdplayers so I won't bother recommending them as there are newer models available. But another alternative you could consider is a freecom network media player You can buy a kit version where you add your own hard drive, which also gives the advantage of replacing it yourself should it ever fail, saving ££s. It saves time and money on burning discs as ypu can either transfer files to the mediaplayer or stream them over your network ie watch any music/video file from your pc on your tv (great for tv series when you don't want to wait until you have a whole dvds worth to burn). This is by far the best gadget I've ever bought and my mpeg4 dvdplayer is now gathering dust as a result!0 -

Maplins and outher places like Scan and Ebuyer have these units which are DivX players with space for a hard disk.
You pop in a Hard disk and use them as external USB had disks. But then they have connectors for TV (Scart Composite) etc... so you can plug them into a TV etc and use them as stand alone DivX players.
If you want a high end DivX player go for one based on the Zoran 888 chipset this does packed bitstream, GMC, Qpel etc so more of the stuff you watch will play.
The cheaper Divx chip sets found in older players on ebay and picture frames will not have such a powerful chip.
The DVD player I got from Aldi has this chip it is the one used in the £200+ Samsung player.
SVP are great for customer service not tried their unit but a great company.Seth.0 -

I have this very player, bought from this very company and I am very pleased with it. It plays from my external hard drive and usb memory stick with no problems. It also plays from my camera's sd card.0
