Advice for a money fool

OK. Last week I was unexpectedly dumped after 5 years by my girlfriend. All very unexpected, but amicable. Anyway, she is going to buy me out of my share of the joint house, and she is also going to pay out for all the furnishings etc that we bought jointly so that I don't end up out of pocket as she is keeping all the goods. This to me is a fair arrangement, and it looks like I might get between 15-30K at the end of it all. Now: I am intending to pay off the small debts I have left ie: overdraft and cahoot loan and some interest free stuff, and aside from a little treat to me (some diving stuff and maybe a diving holiday) I intend to bank/invest the bulk of the loot in order to have a rainy day/surgery/house deposit/emigration fund for the future. I have premium bonds and am going to chuck a load in there, but want to spread it a bit and see what gains I can make from saving and investing. I have in the past been a terrible spendthrift, and intend to use the bad situation I am in to turn myself round and not be broke all the time.
What advice can you experts out there give a novice saver/investor, so that I can make a little more out of the little I will have. Like I say, I have premium bonds, and a first direct e-saver account. After I have paid all the bits and bobs off I will hopefully have about £200 pcm to load into savings etc.(which will come from not having to drive to work all the time, no more loan payouts and all the little bills which won't be there anymore)

oh yeah......that is all being done. Got appointment tommorow pm actually. I am keeping my radar scanning for a rip off, but the split is a shouting fighting free one. We just decided it was for the best, and as she has a small child etc, it is easier for me to go and get my share of the riches out of the equity.0
