Try being a young driver. My insurance is ALWAYS more than the car's worth, I just expect that.0

The OP is trying to save himself money.. why oh why do the dreaded moaning MSE members have to put him down?

the last year will probably cost me £ 7 a day to run my old banger (providing nothing brakes)
£100 to buy it
£29 mot + £3.40 for brandnew headlamp of ebay
£200 tax ish
£230 insurance
£8 wheel bearing
£40 fuel a week
that is probably the same as if i got a bus and i wont catch swine flu in my car or have to take a 1 hour journey
mind you i have to triple this for my three taxed and insured cars but thats my fault
depends how much you earn, my wages suck. lost my IT job, now earning min wage - and lucky to even have that. Some areas of the country (normally the affluent areas) are still enjoying very low premiums. The city where i live has taken a beating by insurance companies. Insurance is my biggest problem, VAT and fuel increases are just the straw that broke the camels back.0 -

Do you not realise that you pay tax at a restaurant or on a holiday?

It's pointless to this thread, and not what the OP was talking about..9/70lbs to lose

Thanks for your input. I am aware how VAT works, my post is about the cost of driving in general not the VAT increase or VAT in general. The comment did not come across as light hearted to be honest. If you cant take it... dont dish it out ;-)0 -

I often consider giving up the car.
I have done it for a few months at a time.
the problem is times when i need to cross the city on a toght timescale
the bus wont cover it in time
Im loathed to pay taxi rates and cycling would take too long.
however the car is quite a cash drain0
